Where do I Ship My Parts to be Coated?

What Do I Need to Include With the Parts?
- Customer contact information
- Grade of coating
- Please mark coating area with a Sharpie marker or similar
- Purchase Order / Packing Slip if applicable
- Return Shipping Information – including UPS or FedEx shipper number if applicable
How Should I Package My Parts for Shipment?
When packaging parts to ship to us, keep in mind that the boxes will go through abuse in the shipping process. It is always better to overprotect so that damage does not occur to your parts. Metal parts should be packaged so that they can not touch other metal parts. Double-walled cardboard boxes are ideal for shipping. The parts should be packaged tightly so that they can not move within the box. Air bubble packing to fill space around heavy metal parts is not appropriate to fill space as it is almost always popped when we receive the shipment. Use packaging paper to fill any voids within the box after contents are added helps to ensure safe arrival.
How Should I Clean My Parts for Shipment?
Parts should arrive at Carbinite clean and free from debris, paints, coatings, etc. Parts received that require bead blasting, sandblasting, grinding, cleaning, or other preparation will incur additional fees.
How do You Indicate Where You Want Carbinite Applied?
You can mark the area that you would like to have coated with marker or paint. A print with the area designated to apply coating also works well for us to know where to coat.
Can Specific Areas be Masked Off for Coating?
We do have the capability to mask off specific areas to coat as our application process is not a spray coating. We use heat-resistant tape to mask detailed areas to apply coating only to the designated area.
How Long does the Process Usually Take?
Can My Order be Expedited?
We can expedite most orders that arrive as overnight packages, as long as they arrive by 10 AM EST. Depending on the size of the order, we can usually process an overnight package the same day we receive it. If we do not have instructions or a PO (if required), we may not be able to complete the expedited order on the same day it is received. If you know that you will need same-day service, please contact us in advance so we can plan accordingly.
For UPS shipments, Red Early AM service does not arrive at our location any earlier than standard Red service. UPS Red Saver will not arrive until late in the day so we cannot guarantee same-day service for parts shipped by Red Saver. UPS Red Service is preferred. Packages sent via FedEx, even overnight service, may not arrive at our facility until late in the day. If you ship your parts via FedEx, we may not be able to process those parts on the same day.
What is Carbinite's Payment Policy?
Our standard terms are net 30. Please contact us if your company requires different terms. We can accept credit card payment. For dyno customers, a 25% down payment prior to scheduling is required and the remainder of payment is due upon completion of the job. Please provide your AP physical address or email address with each order.
Will the Coating Process Adversely Affect My Parts?
Temperature: We can hold the part in our hand during the coating process as the heat is very localized and minimal. Your parts should not be affected by heat generated by the application of Carbinite.
Penetration: The coating does mix somewhat and penetrate the surface of the base metal. We apply the coating in a random pattern so that there is little chance of the coating causing parts to break.
Should I Have Other Processes (heat treat, black oxide, etc.) Performed Before or After Carbinite Coating?
Heat Treat: Parts can be heat treated before or after the application of Carbinite. If the heat treatment is performed after coating, the parts may look different, but the coating longevity and effectiveness will be the same.
Black Oxide: It is better to have your parts sent for black oxide after applying Carbinite.

Can You Coat Aluminum?
Yes, we can coat aluminum though the bond strength is not going to be as strong as with steel. We are limited on the grades of coating due to the softer material. The hardness of the carbide that we add can tend to push into the soft aluminum. Please refer to our Material Compatibility page for more information.
What is the Best Material for the Coating to be Applied?
Steel is the best material and the harder the base material, the better the bond strength of the coating. We can coat metals that are conductive. Extensive testing has been conducted on steel with A2 Tool Steel having the best results. Feel free to contact us if you have an application with a specific type of material and we can discuss further the best options. We cannot coat galvanized products. Can You Coat in-between the Grade of Coatings Listed on the Emery Equivalence Chart?
Yes, we can coat in between the grades of coating. We commonly apply a Grade W+, Grade #1.5, and Grade #2.5. We can go slightly rougher than the Grade #4 on safety flooring applications. These can be viewed on our Emery Equivalences page for more information.
Do I Need to Account for Coating Thickness?
Carbinite’s textured coating will add material to your parts. Many applications do not need to account for coating thickness. If you must maintain a specific tolerance, your parts should be sized accordingly prior to coating application. The amount of material added depends on the grade of Carbinite. Visit our Emery Equivalence page for a list of thickness/tolerance for each grade.
Collet ID
The application of Carbinite will add material to the ID of your collet. To maintain tolerance, you may need to oversize the ID. You will need to account for material being added to both “sides” of the collet.
Collet OD
When applying Carbinite to the OD, you may need to undersize the collet to accommodate the coating thickness. You will need to account for material being added to both “sides” of the collet.
Jaws or other flat surfaces
These parts should be undersized to maintain tolerance after coating application.
